Surfacing
You never used to mind the chill
You traveled deep with whale and shark
The pull of water was your will
You swam with shipwrecks in the dark
Bones and bottles in the sand
Coral stars and chewed-up shoes
You couldn't see beyond your hand
You didn't know your lips were blue
Then one day, floating, unaware
You realize that there's no air
You feel as though your chest will bust
You swim and swim, because you must
'Till shoes and ships are far away, now
And water heats with light of day, now
Oh, gulls and mermaids sing
You're finally surfacing
And you try to go back under
Sometimes you miss the salt of home
But the call is deep like thunder
It sends you drifting through the foam
Now it's streaming all around you
Bubbles rising from the floor
Maybe memory has found you
It shimmers like a secret door
And light comes through the shallow green
And shines like none you've ever seen
You feel the promise of the sky
And you know how bright it is to be alive
'Cause shoes and ships are far away, now
And water heats with light of day, now
Oh, gulls and mermaids sing
You're finally surfacing
